2015 Winter Mantel

The Christmas decor was put away just after New Years and our mantel sat empty and unadorned, patiently waiting for its winter coat to see it through another season.

During this 'naked' period, I had a bit of a revelation. Rocks and timber took center stage without having to compete with anything else and the simple and understated look grew on me with each passing day.

I have always loved our fireplace because of its personal connection....

....My husband and his friend hand picked each and every stone from land here in NH. A skilled mason then worked tirelessly day after day to create the massive rock surround. My children were young and curious back then and would sit and watch in wonder as the stoneworker carefully placed each stone and methodically chose his next move.  The mantel was crafted from the same douglas fir beams that span the cathedral ceiling. Over the years, our family has shared many special moments while gathered around the hearth.

My new found appreciation for the quiet beauty of the fireplace led me down the path to create this Winter mantel. There is nothing fancy - no frills, bells or whistles - just common objects placed sparingly along the ledge.

In my mind, the minimal decor is simply 'enough'. It seems that anything more would overpower the space.

Old man winter is once again bearing down on us here in New Hampshire. Blizzards, noreasters' and bitterly cold temperatures describe our days of late. Our pellet stove is getting plenty of use and we are so thankful for having it to keep us warm and cozy this winter.

  1. Love your stone fireplace! And to think that so much time and effort went into gathering and placing each stone makes it all the more special. No wonder you wanted simple winter décor on the mantel, your fireplace is the star of the show!

  2. Very simple, but it really catches the eyes. An other example that less is often better in decoration.

  3. Suzanne, I do love your mantel decor. It gives me time to enjoy each special piece. The story of your fireplace is so unusual anymore- I hope your kids remember watching it being built. I had meant to comment on your new blog design, too. It really is beautiful and very enjoyable. Your old one was, too, but we all like to freshen up and have a different look. Great job! :)

  4. It's just beautiful, Suzanne! I so appreciate natural materials: wood, stone, paper, glass, pinecones, acorns, leaves, holly berries, and branches, for the ultimate, (in my opinion), winter design! Your cozy fire must be so very comforting during these extremely chilly days. Enjoy it!

    Happy Saturday!

  5. I love this, Suzanne. It has texture and interest and it's beautiful in it's simplicity. I don't like clutter - it clutters my mind and my mood, lol. Such a warm and inviting room!
