Life Changing Vegan Cheese - Miyoko's Kitchen

For many vegans, cheese is the hardest thing to give up. It has been said that it is just as addictive as cigarettes or drugs. Since changing from a vegetarian diet to a vegan diet, I had settled into the fact that cheese was simply a thing of the past.

This was no small task, as many of our favorite family recipes included some type of cheese and pizza was my all time favorite meal.  Over time, my yearnings diminished and it was no longer an issue for me.

Still though, on occasion I would go someplace where pizza was being served and find myself craving the melty goodness I so once loved.

This is where the 'Life Changing' part comes in!

Some time ago, I purchased the book Artisan Vegan Cheese by Miyoko Schinner. I read through the book, but never got around to trying any of the recipes. Then I discovered that *Miyoko also has a cheese shop where you can buy her vegan cheeses. I placed an order for some of her 'Aged English Smoked Farmhouse' and 'Fresh Vegan Mozz'.

You know I had to make a pizza first thing. I topped a simple home made dough with fresh basil, tomato sauce and of course the 'Vegan Mozz'. I can't begin to tell you how delicious this was! I was instantly taken back to my pre-vegan pizza loving days. The mozz melts and stretches like a good cheese should and YES, it tastes every bit like mozzarella.

Up next was the 'Smoked Farmhouse'. I spread it on some vegan fire roasted crackers for an afternoon snack and it was amazing. It has a very smoky flavor and a tartness that I fondly remember from a nice sharp cheddar.

I also tried this variety in a sandwich with grilled peppers, onions, mushrooms and Gardein Beefless Tips and it was another winner. Sorry, I was too busy devouring the sandwich to take a picture for you.

Now that I have tried Miyoko's cheeses and found them to be everything I dreamed of, I need to get out her book and try my hand at making some of my own.

  1. This is great to know! I am not vegan, but my holistic healthcare provider is suggesting that I reduce dairy because it is hard to digest. Thanks for sharing!

  2. I'm never going to make it all the way to vegan but I would love to try this, Suzanne. I'm hoping they ship to Canada. I can't give up my fish so I'll remain a pescatarian but I'm teetering on vegan most days, lol. Thanks for the tip. Enjoyed your photos!
