Penny Rug Progress and Rustoleum

I haven't got much done in the way of quilting or sewing lately, but I am trying to work a few minutes a day on this penny rug.

I am always amazed how much you can get done in just a short time. An added bonus is that sewing and quilting is a great stress reliever for me. Some people go to a spa - me, I just need a needle and thread or a sewing machine.

This pattern is called 'Pineapple Grove' by 'Threads That Bind' . I bought this as a kit last year from 'Cottage Herbs' in Berwick, Maine. The hand dyed wools are just luscious.

On a different note, I bought this 'Rustoleum' paint at 'Lowes' today and wanted to give it a try on this oil lantern that I had bought at Walmart for $5.

A quick spray of the can and this is what I ended up with.

Much better! I used this lantern in my 'Nesting Box' from a previous post mainly because it fit the space, but knew that it was not prim enough for my taste. I feel much better about it now.

Until next time ~ Suzanne.

  8. Love the penny rug, Suzanne...especially the pineapples.

If you want to "antique" the lamp...which looks a thousand times better after you worked your magic on it...thin a bit of burnt umber oil paint with either odorless turpentine or boiled linseed oil (available in most Michael's or similas shops) to the consistency of sour cream. With an old cloth, wipe it all over the lantern, allowing the thinned paint mixture to settle in the cracks and crevices. Then take a clean cloth and wipe off as much of the mixture til you like what you see. Set it aside to dry which can take from 24 hours to a couple of days, depending on how much of the solution you left on. You can also apply a matte spray to seal and dry the paint. Note: Remember to follow the manufacturer's directions when using these products.

  10. This is going to be beautiful. I just love the colors. Can't wait to see it all finished. I just bought me a can of Rustoleum the other day knowing I should have something on hand to paint. I have a lantern just like yours that I have always disliked because it is bright red. Now I know what I can use my paint on. Thanks for the idea.

  13. Nice, very nice! All of it!!

That penny rug is going to be beautiful when it is finished! You're right-- those wools are luscious!! I would prefer a needle and thread over a spa too, I'm glad I'm not the only one.

I'm loving that lantern transformation! I thought it looked fine in the other picture, but it does look much more prim now.
