2012 Reflections

2012 is winding down and a fresh New Year is about to begin. I thought I would take a moment and reflect on the past year and look back at how I spent some of my time.
Sewing is a form of therapy for me and there will never be enough time to finish all the projects that dance around in my head. Using remnants from past projects, I created this trio of pin keeps.
Ruffles have a special place in my heart. They add such a sweet feminine touch whether it be on clothing or home decor. This ruffled bag seemed to be calling my name after being inspired by Katies Rose Cottage.
A quick and easy project sometimes fits the bill. It satisfies the craving to create, but doesn't require a long term commitment as some projects do.
This was one of my favorite projects of the year. I had been wanting to make it for some time, and it turned out just as I had imagined it to be. While virtual inspiration is wonderful, there is something to be said about having a 'physical board' that you can touch and feel and change out as the mood strikes you.
Wreaths are always finding their way onto the walls in my home. This wreath was a simple one to make, but I loved the texturized affect that the different fabrics created.
My love for 'Wild Maine Blueberries' found me creating this recipe often. For a change of pace, I sometimes used dried cranberries in place of the blueberries. This bread also freezes beautifully, so I will make up several loaves at once.
My oh-so-clever husband always has a few projects in the works. He created this 'Rat Rod' from vintage car parts and lots of love. This car was made to drive and we spent much of our summer taking this car out for a 'ride'.
My decor style seems to be evolving. I find myself drawn to a simpler, less cluttered style these days. Vintage items and antiques will always be a part of my decor, just displayed with a lighter hand.
I started a new series on my blog to share some of the wonderful discoveries we have made while going out for drives around New Hampshire and New England. We never know what the next bend in the road will surprise us with.
A simple mantel made up from found objects to reflect the true meaning of Christmas.

It has been a good year and I have enjoyed my time looking back. The anticipation of the approaching New Year, with the mystery of what is yet to come keeps my spirit flying. Wishing you a Very Happy New Year!

2012 Christmas Mantel

I have dressed my mantel in a very simplistic style this Christmas.
I wanted the 'true meaning' of Christmas to shine through in all its glory.
A few simple items - celebrating the birth of Christ.
I was able to find the lovely angel and deer graphic from 'The Graphics Fairy'. I downloaded the file onto the Staples website and had it printed out as an 'Engineering Print' to achieve the larger size. The finished print is black and white. To give it a bit of a sepia tone, I watered down some tan paint and coated the print with it. I added the text to the bottom and mounted it onto an old frame.
I love finding natural items from the yard to use in my home decor. A gathering of twigs was tied together to create the 5-pointed star and some dried flowers were attached to a wire circle to make the simple wreath.
One can never have too many angels and especially during this joyous time of year.
Wishing you and yours a 'Very Merry Christmas'.

Healing Prayers for CT families

My heart is heavy, as so many others over the horrific shootings in Connecticut. May God's healing hands touch each person so deeply affected by this unimaginable tragedy.

In Keeping My Faith,
Suzanne

Scenes from the Side of the Road 3

I am always excited to find the hidden treasures that surround us here in New Hampshire.

This little discovery pulled at my patriotic side. A once proudly displayed American flag painted onto a farmers gate.

A piece of American folk art that is slowly fading away.

On another day, we stumbled across this tin roofed cabin.

With a closer eye, I spotted this whimsical object on the roof that brought a smile to my face. The addition of the 'Pink Flying Pig' only confirms my suspicions that this old place has a story to tell.

Finding new discoveries in our travels is always fun, but the privilege of witnessing one of God's creatures always brings me the greatest joy.

This beauty visits our property quite often and is always welcome. I know that this is a busy time of year for everyone, but I hope you are able to stop and enjoy the view.

Fall Mantel 2012

Another 'Summer' has passed us by and the time has come to welcome 'Fall'.
Autumn in New England brings cold nights and fields filled with their final harvests.
A peaceful walk in the yard provided me with a bounty of natural elements to use on the mantel.
My 'Million Bells' hanger bloomed most of the summer in this galvanized basket. I decided to reuse it to greet the new season with a simple gathering of pine cones.
I have a thing for vintage metal tools and parts and I like to find different ways to display them.
Their worn surfaces whisper to me about their well used past and the hands that once guided them.

I found this weathered wood architectural molding at one of my favorite antique stores. The shop is called  'Log Cabin Antiques' and the owner 'Lynn' is just the sweetest person. Her shop is filled with wonderful and unique barn finds and antiques. Be sure to visit her shop if you are ever in the area.
I am of the mindset that small details make a big difference.
This wonderful antique tool box was a Christmas gift for my husband several years ago.
The paint is 'chipped' perfection.
Only time can create this perfect patina.
Another find from 'Log Cabin Antiques' - a little lantern that looked right at home hanging from our antique wagon steps.
This is my favorite time of year!  Fall has arrived in New England and I am savoring every moment and  hope you are as well.
