Saturday Sparks Link Party 452

Welcome to Saturday Sparks 452!

Starting off today's party with the story of an old friend!

I was scrolling through my camera roll the other day and came across this image from 2018. The standing turkey in this photo was lovingly named 'the brave one' by our granddaughter and for good reason. He first started coming around with a group of wild turkeys, but we quickly noticed that he was the outcast of the group. If he tried to join them, they would peck at him or charge at him until he retreated. After taking a closer look, we saw that his head was covered in lesions. He had the dreaded 'Avian Pox' and we realized that this was most likely the reason for the shunning.

Darling hubby took pity on him and started putting out cracked corn for him, but the others would quickly scramble for the corn and chase him off. Eventually, we were able to coax him into eating from a cup. The flock would scatter as we approached, but not him - hence, 'the brave one' title. After a while, we were even able to hand feed him. His desperate situation brought out the warrior in him. He came every day and we kept up this routine for several months until the day he came no more. We watched for him and even went out looking for him to no avail. We were saddened to think that his days were most likely over, but happy to know that we were able to lessen his burden at least for a little while.

  2. Suzanne, that story of the brave one is both sad and uplifting. We always have a lot of Canada geese, and for several years there was one that was either injured or malformed, with a limp. He was always left behind but managed to hang with the dozens by trailing.
Thank you for the homemade features. Marie's eggnog bread looks yummy. Wonder if hubby would notice if I snuck some of his for baking??
Happy holidays on this palindrome date 121121. 🎄

    1. The ability of wildlife to withstand hardship is amazing, Rita. Heartbreaking at times but inspiring as well. I am sure your hubby would happily sacrifice some eggnog in exchange for some of Marie's bread! BTW, thanks for teaching me a new word today with your 'palindrome' comment. Many smiles, Suzanne.

    1. Thanks, Julie! I seriously considered putting up an alternative tree this year, but caved at the last minute. Your wooden tree inspired me.....so perhaps next year! 🤔All my best, Suzanne.

  5. We are avid wildlife feeders! I have a bird habitat we made from pallets and lots of other materials so they always have a safe place to land. After a light snow it is always fun to see the different tracks in the snow from our visitors in the middle of the night. The 3 D Tree is on my list for the porch next year, thanks so for hosting. Have a wonderful week ahead.
